Day 279 – October 6, 2021
Scriptures: Psalm 75, Jeremiah 25-26, Hebrews 6 “The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the Lord. But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, “You must die!” (Jeremiah 26:7–8, NIV) “It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.” (Hebrews 6:4–6, NIV) Repentance is essential for forgiveness. If you never turn back to God, it is impossible to receive his forgiveness. Jeremiah preaches a message to return to the Lord and repent from the evil they have done, and they will have nothing to do with it. They threaten Jeremiah’s very life. There is not much hope for them! Connecting to Hebrews, the preacher is challenging the people of God to continue to believe. He knows all too well the problems that have faced the Israelites and are now pressing in on Christians. To fall away from Jesus, is to fall away from the only hope we have for forgiveness. There is no other way. “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:19–20, NIV) The anchor of our soul is Jesus Christ, behind the curtain, appealing for us on our behalf. We have one who is holding us together and holding us firm. Praise him, and cling to Christ! The anchor of our soul.
