Day 282 – October 9, 2021
Scriptures: Jeremiah 32-33, Hebrews 9 “For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.” (Hebrews 9:15, NIV) “From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.” (Matthew 27:45, NIV) ““In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.” (Amos 8:9, NIV) “The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “This is what the Lord says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time, then my covenant with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’ ” The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two kingdoms he chose’? So they despise my people and no longer regard them as a nation. This is what the Lord says: ‘If I have not made my covenant with day and night and established the laws of heaven and earth, then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.’ ”” (Jeremiah 33:19–26, NIV) Quoting Jeremiah here again, “‘If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time, then my covenant with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne” At Christ’s crucifixion, darkness came over all the land, in the middle of the day. I have not ever made the connection here to Jeremiah 33, but I think there is one. Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant, because the covenant with the Levites is now obsolete in light of the priesthood and sacrifice of Christ. He’s a better priest, who offers better blood, who now is the author and perfector of a better covenant. God can make a new covenant, because HE CAN break the covenant with the day and night. God has the authority to do so, and we do not. It's a little tricky with the former part of the covenant, “I will make the descendants of David my servant…” God doesn’t break this covenant with David, rather, he fulfills it. There is now, and always will be a descendant of David over the throne, Jesus Christ. Maybe I’ve made too much of a connection here. Let me know what you think. God who made the covenant with the sun and the moon, setting its night and day, is beginning a new creation with Christ. A new day has come, a new age in Jesus Christ and his kingdom. Jordan
